Nov. 3, 2007 Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University volleyball team won its 20th match in a row with a 3-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Carson-Newman College in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs triumphed 30-18, 30-18, 36-34. Carson-Newman drops to 20-10 overall and 3-10 in the SAC. A kill by sophomore middle blocker Megan McVicker (Mercer, Pa.) put Wingate up 18-12 in the third and final game. The Eagles rallied, as the Bulldogs made three consecutive attack errors to allow Carson-Newman to cut the margin to 22-21.
The third game was tied eight times with five lead changes. Back-to-back kills by Eagle freshman middle hitter Kelsey Fleck (Celina, Ohio) gave Carson-Newman a 29-27 lead and an opportunity to win the third game. On the next point, the Eagles made a service error to let the Bulldogs back in the game. Fleck was on fire in the third game, as she put together three more kills in the waning moments. The two teams battled back and forth, but Wingate prevailed on a Stormi Gale kill to take the 36-34 victory. On the evening, Fleck led the Eagles with 16 kills. She compiled a match-high .429 hitting percentage (16 kills, four errors, 28 total attacks). Fleck had nine of her 16 kills in the third frame.
The rest of Fleck's teammates were not as fortunate, as Carson-Newman hit only .105 for the match (38 kills, 25 errors, 124 total attacks). On the other hand, Wingate hit at a .306 clip with 54 kills, 16 errors and 124 total attacks. The Lady Eagles will end the regular season at Catawba with a 4:00 p.m. match on Saturday, November 3.
