JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- After Carson-Newman evened the match with a game two win, Tusculum rallied to win the final two games to defeat the Lady Eagles, 3-1 (30-26, 32-34, 30-23, 30-27) and sweep the regular season series. Carson-Newman (17-7, 2-7 SAC) came out swinging in the first game, building an early 12-9 lead after a Carly Mozgai kill. TC's Katie Luebke, who would lead all players with 22 kills, helped the Pioneers rally with consecutive kills late in game one to pull TC within one game at 23-22. The lead changed hands twice before Kelsey Hayden collected two kills to give TC a game one win, 30-26. In game two, the Lady Eagles earned 15 kills to tie the match at 1-1. A Kelsey Fleck kill pulled C-N to within four at 25-21. Kelli Sorensen and Nikki James added kills of their own to keep them in contention at 27-25. Another Sorensen kill evened the game at 27-27. Fleck took control of the Eagle offense from there, earning a kill to tie the match at 30-30 and adding another kill for a 33-32 C-N advantage. Fleck then served a ball that brushed the top of the net and fell in front of the TC defense for a game-winning service ace. Game three featured the Pioneers earning the first three points and, with Vivian Lacy's five kills, holding off a late Carson-Newman rally to win 30-23. Lacy produced 19 kills for the Pioneers. In game four, a Leubke kill gave TC a 14-8 lead, but the Lady Eagles scored five consecutive points which included a Salem Stepp service ace, two Sorensen kills, and a kill by Stephanie Cutter to even the game at 20-20. Leubke rattled off three straight kills, but Sorensen and James responded to keep C-N close at 28-27. Another Leubke kill and a Heather MacArthur block ended the game and the match to give TC their 20th win of the season.
Sorensen and Fleck led C-N with 13 kills each while Mozgai added 12 kills. Allyson Corhn produced 30 assists with Cutter adding 18. Stepp anchored the Eagle defense with 18 digs while James had five blocks. Hayden contributed 17 kills while Mariana Rezende added 58 assists on the night. Alexis Rowles had 16 digs to lead TC in that category while Lacy added 11. The Eagles will take on Brevard on October 19 while TC hosts Mars Hill on October 23. |
