JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- Heather Myklebust collected 10 kills and Melissa DeLuca added 31 assists as Wingate swept Carson-Newman to remain unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference play, 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-20). The Lady Eagles (16-4, 2-4 SAC) scored the first point of all three games. With Wingate leading 29-25, Carson-Newman rallied behind two Katie Troyer kills and a kill apiece by Carly Mozgai and Kelsey Fleck to tie the game at 29-29; however, Wingate's Kathryn Reddick and Rebecca Bloemer recorded consecutive kills to escape with a 31-29 win. In game two, the Eagles jumped out to a 10-5 lead with Tryoyer, Caitlin Schlegel, and Kelli Sorensen directing the C-N offense, but a Reddick kill and unforced errors by the Eagles allowed the Bulldogs to rally and tie game two at 19-19. WU increased their lead to 28-22, but the Eagles showed resolve as Schlegel and Mozgai recorded kills to get C-N within one point at 28-27. Rachelle Rostas earned the game's final two points with kills to give WU a two-game advantage with a 30-27 victory. In game three, Wingate and C-N were deadlocked three times. A DeLuca service ace and Rostas kill gave WU a 19-15 lead and the Bulldogs held C-N to just five points the rest of the way to win 30-20 and sweep the match. Mozgai led the Lady Eagles with eight kills while Sorensen and Troyer added six apiece. Allyson Corhn posted 19 assists with Stephanie Cutter adding 13. Sorensen paced the Eagle defense with 14 digs while Salem Stepp added nine for C-N. Nikkie James recorded two blocks and one block assist while Troyer contributed two serve aces.
Wingate's Chelsea Cancelliere led the 'Dogs (20-1, 6-0 SAC) with 10 digs with Bloemer recording three aces. WU hit .300 in the final game, garnering 14 kills in 30 attempts with five errors. "It was a challenging night," Sorensen said. "We didn't execute when we needed to, but we will next time. The two words that describe where we are right now is adversity and adjustment. Our chemistry was good and now we have to come together after a loss and win together." The Eagles will have their opportunity on Saturday when they host Catawba in a SAC match at 2:00 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse. |
