HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Carson-Newman men's and women's tennis teams competed at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Men's/Women's Championships this past weekend. The tournament marked the teams' third showing of the year. The Coker College-hosted tournament showcased 21 Division II teams from across the southeast, with the singles and doubles champions advancing to the Oct. 16-19 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. Leading the way for Carson-Newman was the doubles pair of John Borthick (Springfield, Tenn.) and Giuseppe Schwartz (Brazil). The pair went 2-0 in doubles play, defeating the Mount Olive College pair of Miranda and Hewett 9-8 (6) and the Lees-McRae duo of Battle and Vanhoy 8-3. Also adding to the C-N effort, was Trent Slagle, Suzanne Brooks, Emily Sorah and Cassie Moulton. Slagle (Knoxville, Tenn.) advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Men's B-Draw Singles, where he fell to Luis Gonzalez (Augusta State) 6-0, 6-2. For the Lady Eagles, Brooks (Acworth, Ga.) advanced to the Women's B-Draw Singles quarterfinal round, where she was defeated by Columbus State's Hanane Toumi 6-1, 6-0. In other women's action, the Women's B-Draw Doubles pair of Sorah (Bristol, Tenn.) and Moulton (Maryville, Tenn.) advanced to the semifinal round, where they fell to the Lander University pair of Eliza Adusumilli and Nicola James 8-4. Both the men's and women's teams will be back on the courts at the Cumberlands Quad Match on October 11 in Williamsburg, Ky.
