MARS HILL, N.C.--The fourth-seeded Mars Hill College women's tennis team defeated No. 5 Carson-Newman College 5-2 Tuesday afternoon, in a quarterfinal match of the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament. The Lady Lions (16-5) captured two of the three doubles matches,including the No. 1 flight as Nancie Gruber and Aylin Seyalioglu edged Tessa Caprio and Elizabeth Sneed 9-8 (3). Carson-Newman's Amanda Bartlett defeated Gruber in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) at No. 2 singles, but the Mars Hill trio of Whitney Stroud, Patty La Rovere and Maranda Dellinger captured singles points to clinch the match. The Lady Lions advance to Saturday morning's semifinal as they will face top-seeded Presbyterian College. The match will be held at the Nichols Tennis Complex on the campus of Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn. The match begins at 9 a.m. The Lady Eagles end their season at 7-9.
