April 8, 2008 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman's Stephanie Templeton (Ringgold, Ga.) fired a six-inning perfect game as the 11th-ranked Lady Eagles swept Brevard 9-0 and 8-0 in Jefferson City on Tuesday afternoon. With the sweep, Carson-Newman (38-6) stretches its winning steak to nine games. Brevard falls to 8-20. Templeton upstaged senior Zoe Heim's (Gallatin, Tenn.) six-inning, one-hit performance in Game 1 as the Lady Eagles' pitching staff controlled both games. Junior Jessica Armstrong (Olive Branch, Miss.) pitched the sixth inning of game one, allowing one walk. Game 1 Senior Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.) belted a sixth-inning grand slam and starter Zoe Heim (WP, 23-5) surrendured one hit in five innings as C-N beat Brevard 9-0. Hickam drove an offering from Brevard starter Jennifer Gift (Durham, N.C.) out to right field to seal the Lady Eagles' win. The blast was her fifth of the year. She also has 49 RBIs. Brevard first baseman Sarah Carlos broke up the no-hit bid by Heim, lining a single through the left side in the fifth. The Lady Eagles jumped out early, scoring two unearned runs in the first when Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, Tenn.) both came around to score after drawing walks. Howard stole two bases in the inning, and Stevens came in to score on a throwing error by Tornados' third baseman Aimee Rogers (Mebane, NC). C-N would add two more in the second, as Howard, Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, Ga.) and Jessie Kuhlman (Portage, Mich.) each had hits. Freshman Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) added a solo home run in the fourth, her third of the year. She also scored three times in the win.
Kuhlman finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Game 2 Templeton retired all 18 batters she faced in tossing her first career perfect game. The Ringgold, Georgia native struck out eight and forced six fly-ball outs to move to 15-1 on the year. Howard's triple to lead off the third inning broke the scoreless tie. The Knoxville, Tennessee native tripled down the line in left, and came home to score when the throw from left found the Tornado dugout. Hickam and Stevens put together back-to-back hits later in the inning to give the Lady Eagles a 3-0.. Carson-Newman pounded out six hits in the four-run sixth to put the game away. Sophomore Sara Little's (Calhoun, Ga.) double to left center scored Stevens from first to close the game out at 8-0. Stevens led C-N, going 3-for-4 with and an RBI. She also scored twice. The Lady Eagles return to action tomorrow afternoon against Pfeiffer in Meisenheimer, North Carolina at 2 p.m. Brevard will host North Greenville on Thursday at 2 p.m. |
