April 6, 2008 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman's Zoe Heim (Gallatin, Tenn.) allowed just three hits in almost 13 innings of work as Carson-Newman swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader 4-0 and 9-2 Sunday afternoon in Jefferson City. The 18th-ranked Lady Eagles improve to 36-6 overall and 10-2 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 26-14 on the year and 6-4 in conference play. Game 1 C-N starter Zoe Heim fired a one-hit shutout as Carson-Newman grabbed a 4-0 win in game one. Heim's only blemish was a lead-off single to Wingate's Laronda McClain (Kings Mountain, N.C.). The senior walked three and pitched out of her only jam of the day in the top of the first to pick up her 21st win. After McClain's single, Bulldog first baseman Courtney Wagner (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) drew a walk to give Wingate a pair of runners with only one out. Heim responded, getting catcher Jamie Millen (Monroe, N.C.) to line into a 6-3 double play to end the threat. Heim would finish with 10 strikeouts, retiring 15-straight batters at one point. Carson-Newman took the lead in the first, taking advantage of a handful of Wingate mistakes, including a pair of walks, a hit-by-pitch, and an error by starter Brittany Blankenship (Midlothian, Va.). Junior Elisha Collins (Rutledge, Tenn.) drew a walk to score sophomore Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.), who also walked, as the Lady Eagles moved out to a 1-0 lead without the benefit of a hit. The Lady Eagles needed three innings get its first hit off of Blankenship, as senior Whitney Hickam (Knoxville, Tenn.) ripped a double to left center. C-N would plate two more in the fourth. Howard and Hickam each had a double in the inning, as Jessie Kuhlman (Portage, Mich.) added an RBI single to give the Lady Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Hickam went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Lady Eagles. Game 2 Freshman Whitney Kee's (Knoxville, Tenn.) two-run double highlighted a three-run second inning as Carson-Newman grabbed a 9-2 win in game two. Heim (WP, 22-5) came on in relief of C-N starter Stephanie Templeton in the second inning, with C-N trailing 2-0. The Gallatin, Tennessee native fired five and two-thirds of scoreless relief, striking out eight for her second win of the day. Heim tossed 12.2 innings of shutout ball, striking out 18. Wingate jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second. Shortstop Whitney Williams (Little River, S.C.) ripped an RBI double to left to plate Emily Chavis (Berkeley Lake, Ga.) and Leyila Myers (Marietta, Ga.), giving the Bulldogs the early edge. C-N answered with nine runs over the next three innings to put the game out of reach. Junior Amber Palmer (Kennesaw, Ga.) went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs, both coming on a her bases-loaded single in the fourth. Senior Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, Tenn.) also had two hits for the Lady Eagles. Myers led Wingate with a 2-for-3 day. C-N was able to take advantage of nine free passes allowed by Wingate pitchers, including three hit batsmen and six walks. Carson-Newman returns home on Tuesday afternoon when to host Brevard. First pitch is at 2 p.m. Wingate plays host to Newberry on Wednesday afternoon in Wingate, North Carolina. |
