JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles needed a late-inning comeback in Game 2 of a doubleheader with Erskine to complete a two-game sweep of the Flying Fleet, 3-2 and 7-6 (8) in Monday afternoon in Jefferson City. With the wins, Carson-Newman (21-3) extends its winning streak to 14 games. Game 1 Senior Zoe Heim scattered five hits and C-N fought off a seventh-inning rally to pick up her 11th win, 3-2. The Lady Eagles put together back-to-back hits in the second to grab a 1- 0 lead. Senior Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, Tenn.) roped a line-drive single to right with one out, beginning the scoring threat. Sophomore Sara Little (Calhoun, Ga.) would drive her in with a towering double off the centerfield fence. C-N would add a run in each the fourth and the sixth. Erskine cut the lead in half in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Courtney Davis. Lindsey LaPrad's one-out triple put the tying run at third, but Heim struck out the final two batters to end the threat. Stevens, Little, and Jessie Howard (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had two hits in the win. Game 2 The Lady Eagles scored two runs in each of the final three innings to grab a thrilling 7-6 win for the sweep. Little's walk-off triple in the eighth scored Jesse Kuhlman (Portage, Mich.) and Mandy Stevens (Knoxville, Tenn.) to give C-N the win. Carson-Newman overcame leaving 13 runners on base, scoring two runs in each of the final three innings to rally from a 5-1 deficit. Erskine built its lead on the strength of a pair of home runs, the first by Kaitlin Hunt in the fourth. Katie Knapp added a solo shot in the seventh to give the Fleet, at the time, an insurance run. Heim (WP, 12-2) came in to work the final two innings for her second win on the day. She allowed the tie-breaker runner to score, but struck out three and didn't allow a hit.
Little, Howard, and Whitney Kee (Knoxville, Tenn.) each had two hits. Carson-Newman opens South Atlantic Conference play on Thursday afternoon when it hosts Mars Hill. First pitch is at 2 p.m in Jefferson City. |
