March 2, 2008 JEFFERSON CITY, Tennessee - Freshman Whitney Kee's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning capped a three-run rally as Carson-Newman completed a twinbill sweep of Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at the Lady Eagle Softball Complex. C-N won the second game, 7-6, after winning the opener, 7-2. With the sweep, coach Vickee Kazee-Hollifield's squad is now 17-3 on the season while the Lady Panthers fell to 2-4. In the nightcap, the Lady Eagles held what seemed to be a comfortable 4-0 lead entering the seventh inning when trouble arose. With two outs, Kentucky Wesleyan strung together a pair of hits, two walks and a fielder's choice to narrow its deficit to 4-2 before Gabby Simmons' grand slam pushed the visitors in front, 6-4. C-N responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning, Senior Whitney Hickam reached base on an error in front of Mandy Stevens' two-run homer, her fourth of the season, that evened the score at 6-6. Sara Little followed with a single to left and advanced to second when the ball was bobbled in the outfield. Pinch runner Leah Price moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Amber Palmer and scored on Kee's two-out single to left. Elisha Collins had a triple and a single for the Lady Eagles while Jessie Howard had a pair of run-scoring singles and stole two bases. Sophomore Stephanie Templeton (8-1) fanned 11 batters in earning the mound decision over Haleigh Ashworth. In the opener, senior hurler Zoe Heim (9-2) worked her way out of several jams to collect the pitching win over Jamie Ogles.
Stevens led the offensive assault with three singles for the Lady Eagles. Howard added two singes, two RBI and two stolen bases while Little and Jessie Kuhlman each singled twice. C-N returns to action Thursday when Alderson-Broaddus comes to the Lady Eagle Softball Complex for a doubleheader. Scheduled start time is 2 p.m. |
