JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles took advantage of West Virginia State mistakes to sweep a doubleheader from the Yellow Jackets 4-2 and 5-2 Monday afternoon in Jefferson City. The Carson-Newman (13-3) pitching staff worked allowed WVSU to reach base in only 4-of-14 innings, keeping scoring opportunities down, and controlling both games. Game 1 The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles took advantage of four unearned runs get by the Yellow Jackets 4-2. Senior Zoe Heim (WP, 6-2) struck out eight and scattered four hits over seven innings to pick up the win. She allowed only one earned run. The Lady Eagles rallied from a two-run deficit, picking up their first score in the fourth. Sophomore Sara Little walked and her pinch runner, Hope Stanley, would later score on an error by West Virginia State shortstop Charli Small. Freshman Emily Hutchins' line single to left was C-N's only hit in the inning. The Lady Eagles would take the lead with three runs in the fifth. Sophomore Stephanie Templeton's double to right scored two runs, as C-N took advantage of three errors by WVSU to plate three in the inning. The 4-2 lead would hold as the final. Yellow Jacket-starter Samantha Kinder took the loss, but held C-N to only seven hits. The senior walked three and her defense committed five errors behind her. Game 2 The first three batters to step to the plate for C-N reached base and scored as the Lady Eagles completed a sweep of West Virginia State, 5-2. Templeton (WP, 6-1) started the second game, allowing two runs on five hits. Sophomore Jessie Howard continues to be a tough out. She went 3-for-4 in the second game and scored twice. She is batting .509 through 16 games.
Sophomore Sara Little and senior Whitney Hickam each had two hits in the win. The Lady Eagles travel to Bellarmine on Thursday, before returning home to face Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday. First pitch is at 1 p.m. for both doubleheaders. |
