Lady Eagles Fall In Double OT

JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- Kelly Barron scored the game-winning goal off a deflected kick in the 108th minute as Tusculum shocked Carson-Newman, 1-0 to win the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Southeast Regional and advance to the Division II Elite Eight against the University of Tampa in Florida on Saturday, November 11.

Carson-Newman (18-2) dominated possession for the game, outshooting the Lady Pioneers 23-7. Becky Angus led the Lady Eagles with four shots on goal in her final game as a Lady Eagle. Brittany Moore and Christie Murray collected two shots on goal apiece while Zarmena Kasparites, Leslie Marcouiller, Jessie Stephens, and Erica Stegner had one shot on goal each.

"I'm disappointed for our players," C-N head coach Phillip McNamara said. "These ladies learned a hard lesson today that this can be a cruel game."

TC keeper Whitney Wardrop made 13 saves in the match to keep the game scoreless at the end of regulation. In the first overtime, the Lady Eagles had three shots, but couldn't find the back of the net.

"We did everything but score," senior defender Stacey Thomas said. "We definitely felt we were the better team."

"You're never going to see another group like this," added senior forward Erica Stegner.

The Lady Eagles conclude the 2006 season at 18-2. Despite the loss, McNamara had high praise for his seniors.

"I just want to thank all of them," McNamara said. "They've had a fantastic four years here and I want to send them off with the very best wishes."
