Lady Eagles Win SAC

HICKORY, NC-- The No. 7 Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (17-1) won the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on penalty kicks over Catawba College (12-4-4), 4-2, Sunday afternoon at Bears Field in Hickory, N.C.

Carson-Newman was the No. 1 seed in the tournament while Catawba was seeded third as the contest ended after two overtimes tied at one.

The Lady Eagles, the 2006 SAC Regular Season Champions, also won their second league tournament in three years.

Catawba scored just 58 seconds into the match when Jenna Peeples (Longmont, Colo.) scored in the box on one touch thanks to a cross from the right side by Tasha Wilhelm (Mount Savage, Md.). The goal was Peeples' first of the 2006 season.

Carson-Newman quickly tied it in the ninth minute after Megan Julian (Knoxville, Tenn.) finished off a cross from Erica Stegner (Nicholasville, Ky.).

However, neither team was able to score the rest of the way despite Carson-Newman's 17-7 advantage in shots.

Catawba's Kathleen Blake (Greensboro, N.C.) stopped five shots while Carson-Newman's Nyssa Griffin (Adelaide, Australia) made four saves as both goalkeepers gave up just one goal in the contest.
