Jan. 18, 2007 Lady Eagles Win, 3-2 JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- The Carson-Newman Eagles overcame a 2-0 deficit with two second-half goals by Julie Nelson and Katie Perea to claim the 2006 South Atlantic Conference regular season title with a 3-2 win over Newberry College. The Eagle (14-1, 6-1 SAC) fell behind 2-0 in the first half after Carson-Newman allowed an own goal off a Newberry throw-in in the 11th minute and Newberry's Inga Woiwode scored off a double assist in the 25th minute; however, Christie Murray cut the deficit to one goal with a header in the 36th minute as Newberry took a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half, Carson-Newman dominated possession and evened the score off a corner kick. Megan Julian tapped the ball to Julie Nelson who fired a shot from 20 feet into the net at the 71st minute. In the 73rd minute, the Lady Eagles took the lead for good off another corner kick when Katie Perea tapped in the ball off a Rebecca Angus cross for a 3-2 lead. Lady Eagle defenders Stacey Thomas, Nelson, and Rebecca Nulph anchored a defense which shut out Newberry in the second half to preserve the victory. Nyssa Griffin earned the win in goal with two saves on the afternoon.
