Lady Eagles Defeat Mars Hill

JEFFERSON CITY, TN-- Leslie Marcouiller scored twice as the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles got back on the winning track with a 5-1 victory over Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles (10-1, 3-1 SAC) struck early in the first half when Marcouiller fired an Erica Stegner pass past Lady Lion keeper Claudia Cala for a 1-0 C-N lead. Julie Nelson and Stacey Thomas anchored the defense with key stops on Mars Hill's leading scorer Jasmine Riley to hold the Lady Lions scoreless for the first half.

In the second half, Marcouiller gave C-N a two-goal lead with an unassisted strike in the 62nd minute. Brittany Moore then streaked up the middle and fired a shot into the far side of the net for a 3-0 Lady Eagle advantage. Mars Hill finally got on the board as Caity Murnahan hit a shot just past C-N keeper Nyssa Griffin for a 3-1 lead. From there, Becky Angus and Christie Murray put on a show for the home crowd. Murray, a freshman from Scotland, kicked a shot into the net for a 4-1 lead at the 87th minute. Nearly a minute later, Murray tipped a behind the back pass to Angus who found the back of the net for a 5-1 Eagle victory. The Lady Eagles outshot Mars Hill, 38-4 and had nine corner kicks while Mars Hill only managed two.

The Lady Eagles return to action next Saturday, October 7, when they face SAC foe Catawba on the road for a 6:00 p.m. match.
