JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- After a scoreless first half, Sage Sizemore scored the only goal Carson-Newman would need in defeating Belmont Abbey, 1-0 in a key regional game for both squads. The Lady Eagles (8-1) and Belmont Abbey managed just 10 shots combined in the first half. Julie Nelson and Morgan Gruenenfelder had a shot apiece on goal, but B-A keeper Anna Wells saved both shots. In the second half, Carson-Newman controlled possession and struck gold in the 59th minute when Brittany Moore delivered a perfect cross to Sizemore, who flicked the ball into the left corner of the net for the game-winner. "I knew going in that today's game would be tough," C-N head coach Philip McNamara said. "It was a good win for us at home against a strong regional opponent." The Lady Eagles will begin South Atlantic Conference play this Saturday versus Lenoir-Rhyne. "Today's game was a wake up call," McNamara said. "It was a great cross from Brittany and a great finish from Sage on the goal. We just didn't have possession today like we usually do, but hopefully this gets us on our toes for our conference game this weekend." Belmont-Abbey's Stephanie Leotti led the Crusaders with four shots while Wells saved four shots in goal. C-N's match with Lenoir-Rhyne will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 22.
