COLUMBUS, Georgia - Carson-Newman's Nikki Brannen was in the right place at the right time on Sunday afternoon. Teammate Brittany Moore booted a shot that caromed off the crossbar and bounced right to Brannen, who nailed the game-winner in the 83rd minute to give #4 Carson-Newman a 1- 0 shutout win over Columbus State in the finale of the CSU Classic. The two teams played a scoreless first half as the Eagles outshot CSU 12-to-4. The Eagles outshot CSU for the contest 21-to-11. CSU held a 4-to-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Eagles committed 21 fouls for the game, compared to the Lady Cougars' 11. Nyssa Griffin had five saves in goal for the winning Eagles. The only caution of the contest was a yellow card to Caron-Newman's Katie Perea at the 80:54 mark of the second half. The two teams met last year in the first round of the NCAA tournament as Carson-Newman ended CSU's 2006 campaign with a 2-1 win. Carson-Newman (5-1) will host Maryville College on Wednesday at 5 PM.
