JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- Carson-Newman Lady Eagle freshman Nikki Brennan scored twice in the second half as the Lady Eagles avoided a scare to defeat King College, 3-2 in their 2007 season opener. C-N (1-0) trailed early when King's Lisa Forgione flicked a shot past Melissa Terrel in the 18th minute for a 1-0 KC lead. The Lady Eagles outshot King, 9-1 but could not get a goal and trailed at halftime. In the second half, the Lady Eagles evened the match when Brennan took a Zarmena Kasparites feed and fired a shot past King goalie Karmin Helton from 25 feet away. Freshman Morgan Gruenenfielder gave the Lady Eagles the lead for good with her first collegiate goal at the 72nd minute. Mary Alice Rowney kept King in it with an unassisted goal just 20 seconds after Gruenenfielder's goal, but the C-N defense held to claim their first win of the year.
