JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- Carson-Newman women's basketball coach Dean Walsh has signed three players during the early signing period for the 2008-2009 season. 5'8" guard Megan Hunter of Ashland City, Tennessee will don the Orange and Blue next season. At Cheatham County High School, Hunter averaged 17 points, three rebounds, three assists, and 2.5 steals during her junior season. She is a two-time All-District and All-Region selection, shooting 73% from the free throw line and making 24 three-pointers. "Megan is a multi-dimensional guard," coach Walsh said. "She knows only one speed and that is go hard at all times. She is a very good shooter from all over the floor and loves to do the little things that help her team to win a game. I foresee Megan being a huge part of our team's future success and we feel very fortunate to have her in our program." Calera, Alabama native Zoriah Williams, a 5'10" forward at Thompson High School, will also join the Lady Eagles. Last season, Williams averaged 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. She started in the Alabama North-South All-Star game where she led all players with 13 rebounds that game. "Zoriah will bring instant athleticism to our post game next year," Walsh said. "She is a physical, athletic post whose motor never stops running. She can run the floor like a guard and loves to defend. She has an uncanny sense for being in the right place at the right time. Zoriah is a tremendous find for us during the early signing period." 5'8" guard Liz Stringer rounds out the early signees. A native of Parma, Ohio, Stringer averaged 13.3 points, five boards, three assists, and two steals per game her freshman year at Cuyohoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. She made 94 three-pointers that season, averaging 38% from beyond the arc. Through five games this season, Stringer is shooting 50% from three-point range, 71% from the charity stripe, and 15 points per game.
"Liz brings to our program a toughness that we need on the perimeter and another shooter," Walsh said. "She has great range coupled with the ability to shoot the midrange jumper off the move. In 30 junior college games, she has already made 110 three pointers at a 40% clip. Her range will open things up for us next year and we're excited that she chose us early." |
