Dec. 29, 2007 INSTITUTE, W.Va. - If Carson-Newman was supposed to be rusty after a 10-day break for Christmas, no one told Ashley Tipton and Shari Buford. Buford (Hampton, Ga.) finished with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, while Tipton (Knoxville, Tenn.) added 18, on 6-of-7 from 3-point range, as the Lady Eagles rolled to an 86-65 win over West Virginia State in the Red Roof Inn Classic Saturday Saturday night. Carson-Newman (6-5) used an explosive first half to take control. The Lady Eagles led 19-5 eight minutes in, after Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) tipped in a Tykira McDaniel miss (Griffin, Ga.). C-N held West Virginia State to one field goal over the final eight minutes of the first half, while it pushed it lead to out to 43-19 at the break. The Lady Eagles used a 16-8 burst to start the second half to build their lead to 59-27. C-N led by as many as 36 in the second half. C-N's Emily Mason (Rogersville, Ala.) added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sandrea Coleman led West Virginia State with 14. The Lady Eagles play again on Sunday, when they will face Charleston (W. Va.). Tipoff is at 2 p.m. in Charleston. C-N won its last meeting with the University of Charleston 78-73 in Jefferson City last December.
