BANNER ELK, NC - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles defeated Lees-McRae 73-70 for their first win of the 2007-2008 season. The Lady Eagles (1-4) put together a 12-2 run to take a six-point lead at with just under nine minutes to play in the first half. The Lady Bobcats would tie things up at 14; however, C-N would again gain momentum, extending their lead to as much as ten before cruising into halftime with a comfortable nine point edge, 38-29. Carson-Newman would start the scoring in the second, extending their lead to double digits with a pair of Angela Volentine free throws. Down eleven, the Lady Bobcats chipped away at the Lady Eagles lead with a 14-6 run to pull within three at 46-43. Once again, the Lady Eagles regrouped to turn a three-point lead into an eight-point cushion in just more than a minute. Lees-McRae would challenge for the lead again with just under seven minutes to play and the score at 60-57, only to watch the Lady Eagles compile an 11-4 run to take a ten-point lead at 71-61 with 2:42 on the clock. The Lady Bobcats would tighten things up defensively for one final push, clawing their way back to within one, before a pair of Lady Eagles free throws ended the scoring. Tashea Ledbetter went four-for-five from the field and drained all six attempts from the charity stripe for 14 points to lead Carson-Newman. Shari Buford picked up 10 points while Angela Volentine, Ashley Kyle, and Ashley Tipton all registered nine points. The Lady Eagles begin conference play this Saturday when they take on Lincoln Memorial at 6:00 p.m.
