Nov. 25, 2007 Dahlonega, GA - Columbus State scored the final eight points in overtime to defeat Carson-Newman 69-66 in the final day of the Lady Saints Classic (Hosted by North Georgia). Maria Grimes scored 33 points and tied a school record with nine three-pointers made in the Lady Cougar win. Grimes drained a three-pointer with 1:00 remaining in regulation to tie the score at 60-60. The two teams exchanged turnovers and C-N got the ball back with :26 seconds remaining, but Angela Volentine was charged with an offensive foul to give CSU the ball back and a chance to win the game in regulation. Grimes had the ball in her hands again, but this time missed a three-point shot to send the game to overtime. CSU's Hali Moore converted one-of-two free-throws to give CSU a 61-60 lead, but CNC scored six straight points to lead 66-61 with three minutes remaining in overtime. Moore and Ashley Stafford scored on lay-ups for CSU to cut the lead to 66-65 with 2:12 remaining in overtime. CSU made three defensive stops and Grimes made two foul-shots with 20 seconds remaining to give the Lady Cougars a 67-66 lead. CNC's Ashley Kyle missed a jumper with six seconds remaining and Stafford grabbed the rebound and was fouled. She made both free-throws to seal the win for CSU. Emily Mason led Carson-Newman (0-4) with 15 points. Shari Buford had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Tipton added 12 points with four treys. CNC was 24-63 (38%) from the floor and held a 36-29 rebound advantage. Grimes led CSU with 33 points on 10-13 shooting, 9-12 from three-point land. Stafford scored 13 points, made 5-6 free-thows, and had seven rebounds. The Lady Eagles return to action Tuesday night against Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, N.C. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m.
