JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.-- Ashley Tipton scored 18 points, but Lynette Jackson's layup with 20 seconds remaining lifted Clayton State to a 68-67 win over Carson-Newman in the final game of the 2007 Eagle Club Classic. The Lady Eagles (0-2) quickly found themselves down 16-2 in the first half after Shantel Ragin's layup with 13:40 remaining, but they slowly chipped away at the Laker lead. An Angela Volentine jumper and two Lindsey Eggleston free throws put C-N within nine points at 20-11 to cap a 9-4 run. Volentine, Ashley Kyle, and Tipton combined to make six consecutive free throws. A pair of Emily Mason free throws pulled C-N to within one point at 29-28 with 3:34 remaining. Marie St. Fort matched Mason's free throws and Roberta Phillips swished a trey to give Clayton State a 34-31 lead at the break. In the second half, the Lady Eagles began their comeback. Mason's two free throws and layup cut the Clayton State advantage to one point and Volentine's layup gave C-N their first lead of the game at 37-36 with 17:58 remaining. The two teams traded leads throughout the second half. Abby Evans' first trey of the season gave C-N a 51-50 lead with 10:55 remaining, but Phillips answered with a triple of her own to give the Lakers a 53-51 lead. After Tipton knocked down another jumper, Dominique Jennings made another Laker three-pointer for a 64-61 Clayton State lead. Tipton responded with a triple of her own to tie the game at 64-64. Shari Buford nailed a jumper from the top of the key to give C-N a 66-64 lead, but Marie St. Fort tied the game with a 15-footer. After Buford made one of two free throws, Jackson grabbed two offensive rebounds and finally made the game-winning layup.
Volentine and Mason scored 10 points each while Buford added nine points and 11 rebounds. Mason posted a double-double with 10 rebounds to go along with her 10 points. Ashley Kyle scored seven points and led the team with three steals. Jennings led Clayton State with 18 points while St. Fort added 17 and Phillips contributed 13.
