Hickory, N.C. - Newberry College shot a 589 (+13) to lead after the first day of the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Tournament Monday at the Lake Hickory Country Club at Catawba Springs.

Newberry's Ben Lown leads all individuals as he carded a 138 (-6) after 36 holes on the par-72, 6,570-yard course.

Carson-Newman is three shots behind the leader after finishing with a 592 (+16) while Lenoir-Rhyne, the host school, is in third with a 601 (+25).

Rounding out the top five are Lenoir-Rhyne's Jakin Fox (140, -4), Carson-Newman's Tyler Lane (143, -1) and Newberry's Daniel Stanley and Tusculum's Lawson George with an even-par 144.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the third and final round.
