ROCK HILL, S.C. - South Atlantic Conference football co-champions Carson-Newman College and Catawba College led the way with 13 selections each on the 2007 SAC All-Conference Football Team, which was announced today. Carson-Newman senior linebacker Eric Rice, who was the leading tackler on an Eagle team that led the league in rush defense, was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Carson-Newman freshman defensive back Revel Coffey, who had three interceptions and five pass break-ups and 38 tackles, was named Defensive Freshman of the Year. Carson-Newman had a league-high nine players named to the first team. Quarterback Alex Good made the first team offense along with wide receiver Reggie Hubbard and offensive linemen Ross Shaffer and Matt Tyrell. Linebacker Brian Brown joins Rice on the first team defense along with lineman Darius Wrentz and defensive back Denares Waites. Freshman punter Chris Jones also made the first team defense after averaging 41.4 yards per punt this season. On the second team, running back Buck Wakefield and placekicker Aubrey Ingham made the offensive squad while defensive lineman Anthony Toribio and cornerback Otis Ballard made the defensive team. The head coaches in the conference select the All-Conference teams.
