Eric Rice Earned SAC Defensive Player of the Week Honors

Sept. 4, 2007

ROCK HILL, S.C.-- The South Atlantic Conference has named Carson-Newman College sophomore quarterback Alex Good (Greensboro, N.C.) and senior linebacker Eric Rice (Thomasville, Ga.) as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Good led Carson-Newman's second half comeback in the Eagles' 29-17 victory over in-state, NCAA Division I-AA rival UT-Chattanooga Thursday night. Good rushed eight times for 56 yards and one TD. He completed six-of-10 passes for 105 yards and one scoring strike.

A 6-0, 180 pound signal-caller, Good directed an 11-play, 49-yard drive to give the Eagles the lead for good at 15-14 with 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The game-winning drive concluded with a 21-yard field goal by Eagle junior place kicker Aubrey Ingham (Gallatin, Tenn.).

Eric Rice led the Eagle defensive effort in the upset of UTC. Early in the third quarter, Rice intercepted an Antonio Miller pass and returned it to the Mocs' seven-yard line. Rice's 28-yard return led to an Ingham field goal, pulling the visiting Eagles within eight points at 14-6 with 10:59 to play in the third quarter.

A 5-11, 205 pound linebacker from Thomas County Central High School, Rice led the Eagles with eight tackles Thursday night. He got a crucial sack in the second half when he dropped UTC quarterback Cody Romans for a seven-yard loss to give the Eagles the ball at their own 47 with 6:32 left in the third quarter. Rice had two sacks in the game for nine yards.

The SAC football Player of the Week awards are selected by a vote of the league's eight sports information directors.
