HICKORY, N.C.-- Matt Ward rushed for 193 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles routed Lenoir-Rhyne, 56-13 for their 29th straight victory over the Bears. Carson-Newman (7-1, 3-1 SAC) dominated the first quarter, scoring three times in a span of seven minutes. Clarence Goines dented the scoreboard first with a 42-yard TD dash for a 6-0 lead. Ricky Harris capped a four-play, 58-yard drive with a 35-yard touchdown run to give C-N a 12-0 lead. The defense got into the act when Elliott Tarplin blocked an L-R punt and scampered 15 yards into the end zone for a 20-0 lead. Alex Rouse directed the Eagle offense in the second quarter, finding Otis Miller from 26 yards out for a 26-0 lead. Rouse ended a five-play, 66-yard drive with a two-yard TD run and keep the shutout going at 33-0. Doug Belk's seven-yard run gave the Eagles a 39-point lead at halftime. In the second half, Ward maintained the Eagles' offensive momentum with a 47-yard TD run for a 46-0 advantage. After C-N and L-R traded field goals, Ward concluded the Eagle scoring with a 69-yard touchdown for a 56-3. L-R added two late touchdowns for the 56-13 final score. Defensively, Derrick Parker led Carson-Newman with 4.5 tackles while Darius Wrentz and Eric Rice each had a sack each. The Eagles return to Mossy Creek next Saturday, October 27, to take on Brevard College at 1:00 p.m.
