Jefferson City, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles wrapped up their 2007-'08 basketball season with an 18-9 record, and an 8-6 finish in South Atlantic Conference play. The year will be remembered as one of the most explosive offensive seasons in South Atlantic Conference history, after the Eagles finished the season averaging 90.3 points per game, a single-season SAC record. Sophomore Jordan Dixon earned All-SAC Second Team postseason honors at his point guard spot. The Clinton, Tennessee native averaged 10 points per game. He also finished the season with over 100 assists, also one of the top seasons in Carson-Newman basketball history. Fellow point guard Cameron Sharp earned SAC All-Freshman Team honors after helping drive the top scoring offense in SAC history. While the Eagles finished with 18 wins and a great record, injuries and heart-breaking losses kept the Eagles from a 20-win season and a likely NCAA tournament berth. Carson-Newman lost junior forward Bobby Guyton to a foot injury in a 92-89 win at Newberry at the beginning of February. The Jessup, Georgia native was averaging 10 points and 6 rebounds per game when his season ended. He had 17 points and 17 rebounds in a 129-123 overtime win against Catawba. He earned South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week for his effort against Catawba. Junior Jesse McMurray was C-N's second Player of the Week honoree. The Gate City, Virginia sharpshooter made 12 three pointers in wins over North Greenville and Mars Hill. As a team, Carson-Newman set a school record for three pointers made in the game against North Greenville. The Eagles buried 20 shots from behind the arc in the 93-68 win, coming up one shy of the SAC single-game
record.
Carson-Newman graduates seniors Andy Tipton, Darren Williams, Clay Scott, Scott Williams, and Jermaine Grimm. Tipton and Darren Williams are members of the 1,000-point club at C-N. Scott Williams, who played just two and a half years at C-N, came up just over 100 points shy of the mark. Some of the highlights of the Eagles 18 wins included an 86-81 comeback win at Tusculum, in which the Eagles roared back from 13 points down in the second half. |
