BOCA RATON, Fla. - Carson-Newman's Brett Hontz (Newton Square, Pa.) has been named 2008 NCAA ABCA/Rawlings South Region Pitcher of the Year, while outfielder Nick Achberger (Anderson, S.C.) has earned first team All-Region honors, officials announced today. The two seniors led the Eagles to a school-record 43 wins, and a third-place finish at the NCAA Division II South Regional played last weekend in Tampa, Florida. Hontz went 11-1 in 14 starts in his final season at Mossy Creek. The Newton Square, Pennsylvania-native allowed only 29 earned runs on the year, while amassing 98 strikeouts. He held opponents to a .244 batting average and wrapped up his impressive final season with 2.37 earned run average. The 2008 South Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Year finished 6-0 in SAC play, while picking up two more non-conference wins against Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne, to finish 8-0 against SAC opponents. He earned SAC Pitcher of the Week honors three times, and lost only once, a 2-1 decision to USC-Aiken, who spent much of the year ranked in the top ten. Achberger took one of the four spots in the first-team outfield. The Anderson, South Carolina-native caught fire as a junior, leading the Eagles to a SAC Tournament title, and never cooled. The left fielder led the Eagles with a .402 average, 12 home runs, and 19 doubles in starting all 61 games. The first team All-SAC performer also led the team with 90 hits and 70 RBIs. His six triples were second on the team, as the Eagles pounded out a school-record 27 on the season. Carson-Newman finished the season ranked 29th in the Collegiate Baseball Division II Poll. 2008 ABCA/Rawlings Division II All-South Region Team
