Catawba Advances To Food Lion SAC Baseball Championship Game With 14-4 Win Over Carson-Newman

HICKORY, N.C. - The No. 23 Catawba College Baseball Team (37-15) advanced to the finals of the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament with a 14-4 win over Carson-Newman (37-16) in an elimination game Sunday afternoon at L.P. Frans Stadium in Hickory, N.C.

Catawba will take on No. 29 Tusculum in the championship game beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Catawba hit three home runs and every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit in the win.

Bubba Morris (Spencer, N.C.) went four-for-four with two doubles and three runs batted in to lead Catawba's 20-hit attack.

Trailing 2-1, the Catawba Indians took control with a four-run second inning highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Matt Kepley (Greensboro, N.C) and David Thomas (Winston-Salem, N.C.).

The Catawba Indians then pushed their advant age to 9-2 with three more runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by Jerry Sands' (Clayton, N.C.) two-run home run, his league-leading 21st of the season.

Catawba then put the game away with four runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Kepley added three hits and three RBI for Catawba while Carson-Newman's Mills Rogers (Simpsonville, S.C.) drove in two runs to lead the Eagles.

Catawba's Tim Smith (Walnut Cove, N.C.) improved to 4-2 with the victory while Carson-Newman's Wes McIntyre (Chattanooga, Tenn.) suffered the loss and fell to 5-2.
