JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Eagles swept a doubleheader from visiting Tiffin 5-4 and 12-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon. Carson-Newman (21-9), winners of three straight, improved to 10-2 at home this season. Game 1 Starter Brett Hontz scattered five hits over six innings, as Carson-Newman held off the Dragons 5-4 in game one. Hontz (WP, 5-1) struck out two and allowed two earned runs. Sophomore Michael Elliott went the last inning and a third to pick up the save. Carson-Newman plated four in the fifth to pick up the win, taking advantage of a walk and two hit batsmen. Sophomore Derek Long's two-run single was the key blow, as C-N built a 5-1 lead. Elliott was able to get Tiffin's Ty Blake to fly out with the bases loaded, ending a three-run sixth and the Dragon's threat Long was the only Eagle with two hits in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Game 2 Carson-Newman broke open a 3-1 game with a six-run fifth in beating Tiffin 12-1 in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. Senior Langdon Potts broke out of his mini-slump with a 3-for-4 effort, including a two-run triple to left-center in the fifth. Senior Jonathan McMahon added a two-run single down the line in left as well. Freshman Zack Howell helped the Eagles put the game away in the seventh, belting a two-run double off the wall in right-center to stretch the lead to 11-1. Eagle starter Jeremy Yoder (WP, 2-3) took the win, allowing one run through three innings. Four Eagles combined to lose out the final four innings. Corbin Arial worked 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit.
Blake went 2-for-3 for Tiffin, scoring the Dragons' only run. Carson-Newman will face Caldwell on Tuesday afternoon, moving Monday's game back a day. The doubleheader will begin at noon. |
