AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta State scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday afternoon to scratch out a 4-3 win and forge a split of its non-conference doubleheader with Carson-Newman at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Darren Swift's two-out, RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh scored Bryson Smith, who reached on an infield single to open the inning. Pinch-runner Justin Roberts then raced home from second with the game-winning run when rightfielder Corey Lamson's throw to the plate sailed over the head and bounced away from catcher E.T. McCreary.

ASU sophomore righthander Kyle Payne (1-0) earned the win in relief, allowing a hit and striking out two in 1.2 innings. Freshman righty Steven Voigt turned in a solid performance in his first collegiate start, yielding five hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. He struck out five and walked just one.

Corbin Ariail (0-1) suffered the loss for Carson-Newman, surrendering three hits and two runs in 1.2 innings. Starter Jeremy Yoder gave up three hits in 5.0 innings and struck out three.

Swift went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Langdon Potts went 2-for-3 to pace the Eagles.

In game one, C-N jumped out in front 6-0 and pounded out 15 hits en route to a 9-3 victory.

Jason Gray and Tyler Wynn tallied three hits each for the Eagles, while Langdon Potts, Wesley Dozier and Nick Achberger booked two hits each. Gray drove in three runs and Dozier added two RBI.

 

 

Jorge Virguez, Alex Walker and David Barnes notched two hits apiece for the Jags.

Justin Higdon (1-0) earned the win, striking out six in 6.0 innings. Dustin Davis logged three scoreless innings in relief of Higdon.

ASU starter Adam Mathis (0-1) was touched up for eight hits and four runs in just 2.2 innings. Brandon Iverson tossed 4.2 innings of relief, five hit and three runs with two strikeouts and a walk. Scott Strickland was charged with two hits and two runs - none earned - in 1.2 innings.

C-N will face Paine today in Augusta, Georgia at 11 a.m. The Eagles travel to Aiken, South Carolina for a three-game serier with USC-Aiken next weekend.
